One important thing to find out first when looking at reception venues is if there is a venue/room hire fee and is it exclusive use?

Is there different packages on offer and what is the cost per head? We know already that this is your most expensive cost, taking up about 50% of your budget. You must also ask if there is VAT included and if there is a service charge to avoid unexpected costs.

Is there in house catering and a bar, or do you need to hire your own?

It is a good idea to also find out at this point about a deposit. How much deposit is required to secure the booking?

How much is a buffet/evening food per head? A good point to consider is to only cater for 75% of your guests. Most venues will also use this as a minimum.

What is included in the venue hire? Do you get tables, linen etc. or must you hire your own? Most reception venues will have this already and it will be included in the cost, but it is a good idea to check.

Is there a bridal suite for getting ready in and for the wedding night?

It can be stressful worrying about your guests and making sure they have somewhere to stay. Ask if is there accommodation at the venue or locally that you can recommend to guests. Also check if there is a wedding discount for any guests that book.

Finally for the evening is there a dance floor and is live music permitted. What time does the party end? You won’t want it to end, but will soon be glad to take those dancing shoes off and relax!
